Exploring Prayers

Special Prayers

Why do we pray? Some of the reasons we are for guidance, comfort, and thankfulness to God for what he has done for us. Favorite prayers give us comfort and peace; our new favorites and ones we have known almost forever.

The prayer most of us have learned as a child, is the bedtime prayer. Many children kneel before their bed saying “Now I lay me...” Like “Jesus loves me...,” these familiar prayers as well as songs stick with us all through life. In church, no matter what denomination, most of us say “Our Father, who art in Heaven...” The 23rd psalm is a favorite prayer as well as one of the most popular Psalms in the Bible. It gives us comfort to say “The Lord is my shepherd....” We feel by saying this that God will take care of us. No matter where we go or what we do, He is there. Prayers that are said in churches are the “Apostle's Creed” and the “Nicene Creed.” Both of these state that there is only one God and that Jesus died on the cross, rose again and is on the right hand of God. In some of these loved prayers, we see the beauty and strength of God and what He can do in our lives.

There are many other prayers that we all know and love. There are prayers for all sorts of different occasions, happy and sad. One prayer that is very powerful is the “Serenity Prayer.” We all need to be reminded that there are things that we'd all like to change, but we need to realize that there is a difference between what we can and can't change. Just know that God's presence is near, and when we pray, we feel Him even more.
