The definition to prayer is simple. According to Wikipedia, "Prayer is the act of attempting to communicate with a deity or spirit." Prayer has been brought down to even more basic principles. Every prayer that is uttered has a meaning and a categorization. There are seven different types of prayers that can be used, and no matter the religion the prayer still stands.
First is what is called the “Petition Prayer.” This prayer is when you ask for something or want something. In all religions people have prayed to their God asking for a certain deed to be done, or help in overcoming some obstacle. That is the meaning of Petition Prayer.
Second is called the “Confession Prayer.” This is simple to explain, as it just means to offer up your confession to your lord. All your wrong doings and even your right doings should be listed. Confession isn't to cleanse it is more of a report card to God, so God can tell how you have been doing.
Third is the “Adoration Prayer.” This prayer is just to show your God your love. It has no other uses but to exalt God.
Fourth is the “Intercession Prayer.” This prayer is to ask for something on the behalf of others. When a church group prays for someone, it is an example of intercession prayer.
Fifth is the “Meditation Prayer.” This prayer is a way to clear the mind and be silent in the face of our inner turmoil. Being silent is supposed to help us think and be able to pray better.
Sixth is the “Thanksgiving Prayer.” This is the basic idea of giving thanks for the blessing that all has received in life. Even if we don't think we are blessed.
Seventh is the “Consecration Prayer.” This prayer involves opening all of a persons life to their God. Between the spiritual and physical part of people it should all belong to the idea of healing and saving those around us. This is an unselfish prayer that becomes a lifestyle once fully acted upon.
