The King James Bible

There are many different translations of the Bible, but which one is the right one? Everyone has their own opinions and that is all anyone can base their decisions on. All of these different translations stem from the Christian Bible. The King James version is the English translation which was begun in 1604, but wasn’t published until 1611. King James I of England was responsible for the writing of this version.

King James I wanted to translate the Bible in a way that reflected the beliefs and structures of the Church of England. The translation of the Christian Bible into the King James Version was done by forty-seven scholars. After the book was finished and published, the King along with the Church of England pushed for this new translation to replace the current Bibles. By the 18th Century, no one challenged the King James version. In 1884, the phrase, “King James version” first appeared in print.

A few decades later, a new version was released. It is called the 21st Century King James Version. It is more of an update than a new translation. It is very similar to the King James Version, but updates certain grammar that is not longer used. For example, the King James Version would read, “…and sat down astonied.” In the 21st Century King James Version, it would read, "…and sat down stunned.” The second is a much more commonly used word. The new version did, however, retain the phrases like “thee” and “thou.” Another version that was based on the King James Version is the New King James Version. It was a translation into modern day language.
